چکیده

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology performance is evaluated for Class C (variable bit rate, asynchronous) data transfer, as would be typically found when migrating legacy applications to an ATM environment. Of particular interest are the end-to-end latencies obtainable using ATM networks to transfer time critical data. Latencies obtained using Classical IP over ATM and raw ATM using the Fore ATM API are compared to performance of traditional TCP/IP on equivalent FDDI networks. It is shown that at OC-3, in it’s simplest configuration of back to back nodes, Classical IP over ATM latencies are greater than those obtained using FDDI, particularly at small message sizes. However, the results show that IP over ATM via ATM switches can exhibit better performance than FDDI switches or routers, due to the optimization of the ATM switch for fixed size cells. Thus, these benchmarks confirm that ATM provides a good foundation for building high performance IP internetworks. Using raw AAL 3/4 ATM, significantly lower latencies than the equivalent IP over ATM results or traditional FDDI results are presented, both in back-to-back configurations and through network devices such as switches and routers. A discussion of tradeoffs associated with using FDDI versus ATM for mission critical, real time data transfer applications is also included.

Bit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...

MPEG-2 Transport over ATM Networks

The growth of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology and the maturity of coding standards have made the large-scale deployment of high-quality audiovisual services possible. In this article, we discuss the principal issues involved in transporting MPEG-2 streams over ATM networks for both constant bit-rate (CBR) and variable bit-rate (VBR) MPEG-2 Transport Streams. We review existing and p...

Dynamic reservation TDMA protocol for wireless ATM networks

A dynamic reservation time division multiple access (DR-TDMA) control protocol that extends the capabilities of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks over the wireless channel is proposed in this paper. DR-TDMA combines the advantages of distributed access and centralized control for transporting constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and available bit rate (ABR) traffic efficien...

Performance of TCP / IP Using ATM ABR and UBR

We study the buuering requirements for zero cell loss for TCP/IP over satellite links using the available bit rate (ABR) and unspeciied bit rate (UBR) services of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. For the ABR service, we explore the eeect of feedback delay (a factor which depends upon the position of the bottleneck), the switch scheme used, and background variable bit rate (VBR) traac....

Simulation Of Improved ATM Switch Using Dynamic Buffer Sharing and Multiprocessing

In an ATM network, the network performance depends on many parameters, including the architecture of the network and the performance of switching elements. The current paper discusses, the performance improvement by modifying the switch fabric and packet forwarding, using simulation concepts. A switch consists of some input buffers and an algorithm, to select the cells waiting in the queue, to ...
